New? Part of an earlier announced "lump sum" order with CAAC?
QUOTE
The Chinese airline (ZNH.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said in a statement it had made a long-term purchasing agreement with the U.S. plane maker on Monday to buy 55 B737-700 and B737-800 planes, without offering a breakdown of aircraft types.
It was not clear if the 55 planes, to be delivered between May 2011 and October 2013, were part of an earlier purchase agreement or represented new orders.

IIRC, the 2005 "tranche" was all taken up, or am I confusing this with the 60 787s?

Yes, the 787's were all placed- the 737s and A320's are still be allocated IIRC.

^Well in that case, congrats to Boeing on this nice order boost. Although, with 100 UFO 737s this year, some of those might be for CZ, who knows.

Boeing, unlike Airbus, only books a Chinese order when it has a contract with a specific airline. I also doubt these orders are existing UFOs. China Southern has a rather distinct ordering pattern, as they order both 737-800s and 737-700s at the same time/as part of the same transaction.
02-Oct-2001: 12 737-800 and 8 737-800
29-Dec-2005: 11 737-800 and 9 737-700
15-Jun-2006: 7 737-800 and 3 737-700
Through July, there are no cases of a 737-800 and 737-700 UFO order being booked on the same day. Also, the UFO orders are rather broken up, with losts of orders two to seven planes. The big UFO orders are for 25 738s, 22 739ER (so obviously out), 15 738, 12 73G.
It is entirely possible though that some previously agreed to orders are listed as UFOs -- China Southern would, for example, be the leading candidate for the six 777F UFO order back in February (China Southern signed a MOU/LOI last year for exactly that quantity).

Sept 6 (Reuters) - Boeing Co (BA.N:

The order is worth $3.8 billion at catalogue prices, Boeing said in a statement.
The 55 airplanes will add to the 129 737s already in China Southern's fleet and the 14 more 737s yet to be delivered from previous orders, Boeing said.

So, unless they retire any older 737s, CZ could have a fleet of no less than 198 737s, holy cow! Almost WN/FR-esque dimensions.
