BUENOS AIRES, Feb 5 (Reuters) - State-owned Aerolineas Argentinas has signed an agreement to buy 12 B737-700 aircraft from U.S. builder Boeing (BA.N), Planning Minister Julio De Vido said on Thursday.

The Argentine government recently expropriated Aerolineas, the country's biggest airline, and cargo carrier Austral from privately held Spanish tourism group Marsans, saying the owner had operated them badly and run them into debt.

"Aerolineas Aerolineas has signed the purchase of 12 new generation B737-700s ... which will be added beginning in April," De Vido said in a ceremony where the government signed a salary deal with union airline workers.

De Vido did not say how much the deal with Boeing was worth.

Before the expropriation, Marsans had signed a deal with Airbus, a subsidiary of European aerospace and defense group EADS (EAD.PA), to acquire 61 planes, some for Aerolineas Argentinas.

It was not clear whether Aerolineas will still get some of those planes.

Austral may purchase aircraft from Brazil's Embraer, De Vido said.

This can not be good news for EADS.

Maybe not, but as yet there's no announcement from Boeing. Deliveries commencing in just two months time suggests that at least some of these acquisitions are from the second hand market and might be leases. This supported by:

Possibly Skyeurope aircraft recently repossessed by GECAS?

It was their announcement, did they lie or was the spokesman misinformed?

Depends on whether any of the planned A380-800's find their way into AR's fleet or whether they all end up at Comet. And this depends on the strategy / attitude that Marsans decides to take against the Argentinian Government.

Keeping all 4 for the Comet operation might allow Marsans to decimate AR's Argentina-Spain operation by undercutting on price. Similarly, forcing the 2 x A380-800's on AR might cause AR to operate an uneconomical fleet, which outweighs any operational savings the company may make with the frames.

So, it's conceivable that it could go any number of ways, IMO.

Yep thats correct - apparently 6 SkyEurope 73G's will be part of the deal. Not sure about the balance that AR seeks.
