AirAsia X, the long-haul affiliate of Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia, is looking for up to five more Airbus A340-300s to support growth while awaiting the 25 A350s or Boeing 787s that it is planning to order.

The airline needs the aircraft to extend its network to such destinations as Germany, France and New Zealand.

It now has three A330s and a single A340, linking Kuala Lumpur with three Australian destinations and one in China. London will be added to the network next month.

"For the right price, we would like to lease five A340-300s, although they are in tight supply," chief executive Azran Osman Rani tells Dow Jones Newswires.

Tony Fernandes, the chief executive of AirAsia and a founder of AirAsia X, has previously identified the A340-300 as a key aircraft type for the long-haul carrier's early development, although he also complains that it is costly to run.

It's strange they want A343s. From what I have read it's one of the most uneconomical aircraft flying. Although it's probably easier to get uneconomical aircraft than economical one's. smile.gif

Are there even any available??
Jet Blast
Well, it said they were in tight supply. However, with airlines cutting back routes nowadays, it might be possible to pick up some A343s since those would probably be the first to go.

Well they may want to have a common pool of pilots for all their widebodies and the A330-200, while it has the legs, doesn't have the capacity the A340-300 has. And their A330-300s can't make Western Europe (at least with anything approaching a full payload).

Yes there are, according to Speednews - http://www.speednews.com/EquipmentResults....p;Aircraft=A340

Ignoring the sales with leases attached, there are
Three early birds from Air Comet MSN007, 013, 015
One Air Canada MSN278 (sister ship to MSN273 that AirAsiaX have just received)
One SAS MSN450
One Etihad MSN117

Carriers who could be expected to shed some A340s as more 777-300ER arrive include AF and CX.
