Pretty sure the eight 737s are the UFOs listed on Boeing's website today.

SEATTLE, June 11 (Reuters) - AMR Corp's (AMR.N) American Airlines said on Thursday it exercised rights to buy a further eight of Boeing Co's (BA.N) 737 jetliners on Thursday, worth about $600 million at list prices.

The airline, one of the world's biggest operators of Boeing's single-aisle jet, now expects to take delivery of 31 737s this year and 45 in 2010. It has purchase commitments on a further eight 737s for 2011.

Slowly, very slowly, they are replacing the older MD-80s. How many 737NGs does that make for AA?

While it cuts flights, American is trying to replace older planes with new ones that get better fuel mileage. The company said Thursday it will add 84 new Boeing 737 jets through 2011, up from an old target of 76. The planes in its fleet of about 600 are an average of 15 years old.

While I love the MadDogs (I think I've flown on every single one of AA's MadDogs in the fleet during the past 12 years..lol), its time for a change. That being said, sitting on the left side of the plane from row 21 on up is quite nice.

It is, but actually I have found that the isle seat on the right (3-seat) side is the most comfortable. The 738s have better amenities, but are not necessarily more comfortable in coach as the seats are at leats 1" narrower. Despite AA puffing about the new seat contour and padding, Southwest has a much more comfortable cabin. In any event, the MDs need to go. Too many reliabilitiy problems that cause delays in ORD and DFW and slow down the AA route system. And with fuel prices going back up, AA would be wise to redeploy some of the 738s on more of its west coast routes out of ORD (particulalry with rumors flying that DL will be repositioning A320s out of MSP and DTW and replacing them with used MD90s). The last AA Fall schedule I saw had several 738s going through LAX, LAS and SEA, but still few assigned to SFO (where AA still has good loads), SAN, and SJC. AA should add ORD-PSP as well. Often very full planes during the winter season in Chicago.

I am flying in seat 20D in a couple of weeks..wink.gif

I never found AA's cabin to be "uncomfortable". The only time I really found AA "uncomfortable" was when I flew JFK-LHR in J back in April and my seat was busted(needed to be manually adjusted and didn't fully recline)......grrrr.....realmad.gif

That being said, it was a free upgrade (flight was oversold) so I really shouldn't be complaining. Hehe...

Regardless, I agree, the B738's save much more fuel over the MadDogs and their time has indeed come.

Finally, I prefer TW's MadDogs over AAs..

For anyone lamenting the MadDogs... they're still gonna be here for a while.

Even if AA stays at around this rate, replacing 3-4 per month (which is doubtful they will), it's still gonna take 7-8yrs for them to all be gone. We're still gonna be seeing them around post 2015, barring something extraordinary.
