Africa Civil Sale Leads The Way

release date: 15th November 2009

Airbus and Ethiopian Airlines today (Sunday) announced the first order of this year’s Dubai Airshow, being held at Airport Expo Dubai in the United Arab Emirates until 19 November.

Ethiopian Airlines confirmed an order for 12 Airbus A350 XWBs, a deal worth US$ 3 billion on catalogue prices, which takes sales of the long-range, mid-size A350 XWB beyond 500. The A350, which will be the first Airbus with fuselage and wing structures made primarily of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic, is due to enter into service in 2013 and a cabin mock-up of the aircraft is drawing interest at the show.

Girma Wake, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, said: "We are committed to investing in industry leading technology to maintain our unrivalled reputation in Africa, while we continue to grow at around 20 per cent year-on-year."

The spectacular A350 cabin mock-up is one of hundreds of exhibits at the Dubai Airshow which serve as pointers to the shape of air travel to come.

Dubai Airshow 2009 is the 11th and the largest in the biennial series with 890 companies from 47 countries - a 10% rise in exhibitors on the 2007 event. The show is open to trade visitors only.

Note: this appears to be a confirmation of a previously announce MOU made by ET earlier this year.
